Roots the Square - crochet pattern
I designed this square as part of the Traveling Afghan blanket project. I replaced with this square one of the original designs.

You will need your favorite yarn, crochet hook, tapestry needle and scissors. For blocking the square you also need blocking mat and pins.
Skill level intermediate – you will need to know how to make magic ring, FPdc, FPtr
Yarn wool or cotton yarn of your choice, 2 colours
Hook matching to your yarn choice
Yardage about 40 g
Size after blocking about 21 x 21 cm (size depends on the yarn and hook you use)
Stitches used – US terms (UK translations)

ch chain
sl st slip stitch
sp space
sc single crochet (dc=double crochet)
hdc half double crochet (h tr = half treble)
dc double crochet (tr=treble)
FPdc front post double crochet (RtrF=raised treble front)
FPtr front post treble crochet (RdtrF =raised double treble front)
dcFPtr tog double crochet FPtr together (tr RdtrF together = raised treble and raised double treble together)
3FPdc tog 3 front post double crochet together (3RtrF tog=3raised treble front together)

yo, insert hook in the designated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo twice, insert the hook around post of designated stitch, yo, pull up a loop(5 loops on hook),yo, pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through all the remaining loops.
3FPdc together
yo, insert hook in the designated stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops, repeat two more times. Finally yo, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
Round 1, color A
*Make a mr, ch 5 (= dc, ch2)
*(Dc, ch 2 in mr) repeat 10 times, sl st to 3rd stitch on starting chain. Fasten off. [12 dc, 24 ch]
Round 2, color B
*In any ch 2 sp ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, skip dc
*(3 dc in the ch 2 sp, skip dc ) repeat to the end, sl st in the top of starting ch3. Fasten off. [36 dc]
Round 3, color A
*Attach yarn in any space between 3 dc clusters
*FPdc around the dc in round 1, ch 3
*(sl st in the next space between 3 dc clusters, FPdc aroun the dc in round 1, ch 3) repeat to the end, sl st in the first FPdc. Fasten off. [12 FPdc, 12 sl st, 36 ch]
Round 4, color B
*In any ch 3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp, skip FPdc
*(4 dc in the ch 3 sp, skip FPdc) repeat to the end. sl st in top of the 3 ch. Fasten off. [48 dc]
Round 5, color A
*Attach yarn to any space between 4 dc clusters
*FPdc to the dc in round 3, ch 4
*(sl st in the next space between 4 dc clusters, FPdc around the dc in round 3, ch 4) repeat to the end, sl st in the first FPdc. Fasten off. [12 FPdc, 12 sl st, 48 ch]
Round 6, color B
*In any ch 4 sp, ch 3, 4 dc in the same sp, skip FPdc
*(5 dc in the ch 4 sp, skip FPdc) repeat to the end. sl st in the top of the 3 ch. Fasten off. [60 dc]
Round 7, color A
*Attach yarn to any space between 5 dc clusters
*FPdc to the dc in the round 5, ch 5
*(sl st to the next space between 5 dc clusters, FPdc around the FPdc in round 5 , ch 5) repeat to the end, sl st in the first FPdc. Fasten off. [12 FPdc, 12 sl st, 60 ch]
Round 8, color B
*Attach yarn to any ch 5 sp, *6 sc, skip FPdc, 6 sc, skip FPdc, make corner ( 1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2dc, 1 hdc) repeat from * 3 more times. sl st in the first sc. [48 sc, 8 hdc, 16 dc]. DO NOT CUT THE YARN
Round 9, color B
*Continue with color B, 3 ch (= dc), 14 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the ch2 space from previous round.
*18 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch2 space from the previous round, repeat 2 more times, 3 dc, sl st in the the top of the 3ch. Fasten off. [8 ch, 88 dc]
Round 10, color A
Note! Be aware that you do not skip any dc from the previous round
*In any corner sp, ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc
1. 3 dc, dcFPtr tog in the next dc and the FPdc on round 7, 1 dc, dcFPtr tog in the next dc and the same FPdc on round 7, 1 dc, make dcFPtr tog in the next dc and the same FPdc on round 7
2. 3
dc, dcFPtr tog between two dc on previous round and the FPdc on round 7
3. 3 dc, dcFPtr tog in the next dc and the FPdc on round 7, 1 dc, dcFPtr tog in the next dc and the same FPdc on round 7, 1 dc, dcFPtr tog in the next dc and the same FPdc on round 7, 3 dc
4. make corner (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
*repeat 1.-4. 3 times omitting the last corner, sl st in top of 3 ch.
DO NOT CUT THE YARN
Round 11, color A
*Continue with color A, ch 3, 1 dc, make corner (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
*(7 dc, 3FPdc tog in the dc on the previous round, 5 dc, 3FPdc tog in the dc on the previous round, 5 dc, 3FPdc tog in the dc on the previous round, 7 dc, make corner (2 dc, ch 2, 2dc) repeat from * 3 more times, omitting the last two dc and corner. sl st to the first dc. DO NOT CUT THE YARN
Round 12, color A
*Continue with color A, sc all around, 3 sc in the ch2 corners. sl st in the first sc.
Finishing touches for squares made with wool
*Soak the finished square in lukewarm water with a drop of fabric softener or wool detergent. Let the square get wet properly.
*Carefully squeeze out any excess water and pin the square to the blocking mat with safety pins. Allow to dry.
Finishing touches for squares made with cotton
*Pin the square on the blocking mat and hold a steam iron over the piece about 1/2 inch away from the surface.
*After steaming, let your piece rest and dry for at least 30 minutes. Make sure the piece is dry before working with it further.
